Disappointingly, when I decided the prayer site was crying out for me to put in a thank you prayer (in txtspk) to Andrew for being hysterically funny, I found it's shut down the prayer bit.

I'm still laughing at this - it's the funniest thing I've seen for a long time, but also quite sad. I used to be an evangelical Christian when I was young, and I have to say that I always had real problems over prayer. What could possibly be the purpose of it? God knows everything: He also knows what is best for us, and will only send that our way; and His eternal will is unchangeable in any case, so what exactly is the point of trying to twist His arm to get what we want? Someone above says "Give health to all sick people", which seems a perfectly reasonable request, until you consider that it must have been God who sent their sickness in the first place! What's the point of making someone sick just so that you can heal them? However, on the site itself there is this gem (I kid you not): "Please pray for Tommy who was buried in Birmingham. God rest his soul." I'm not sure whether being "buried in Birmingham" is the crucial thing here, but as pointless prayers go, this one must surely take the wafer. It's a bit late to start praying for your friends after they have departed this scene, I would have thought, and just what exactly does that phrase "God reat his soul" actually mean when you analyze it? Is there some danger of his soul whizzing around space in a highly agitated state for the rest of eternity, or something, if God doesn't intervene?
