“Don’t worry plh - I know you don’t think much of homeopathy but CRUK says this stuff is very effective.”

This is especially problematic because I'm generally against the idea that in a publicly funded health service people should be able to opt for their favourite, instead of the proven and recommended, treatments -- say, Jehovah's Witnesses should be free to refuse blood transfusions (for themselves) but have no right to demand an alternative. If quacks get affiliated with too credible organisations then by my own argument I'll have no right to expect medicine that works.

It's extremely worrying. I'm sure whatever research Bates' group is doing now is good science and nothing to do with homeopathy but I dread to think what could happen if one day Tournier gets a chance to steer the direction of such research. And if I was ever unfortunate enough to be suffering from the side effects of cancer therapies, I certainly wouldn't want my doctor to be giving me homeopathic sugar pills to ease it and telling me: "Don't worry plh - I know you don't think much of homeopathy but CRUK says this stuff is very effective."

Yep, there he is...

Although to be fair he does say he is "specialising in the palliative treatment of the side effects of cancer therapies", which is nothing like as bad as "specialising in curing cancer with tapwater".

And he's working with this guy?

Very strange, I think.

and I think maybe it needs to be looked at more closely.

Another excellent post, very well said.

I am, erm, lucky, enough to have a whole string of relatives who swear by weird, vague and basically mythical homepathic remedies for everying. While I think they are insane, it is always nice to have extra ammunition to throw at them.

Thanks for the post.
