’Security
February 11th, 2006I started a new job on Monday. I work down an incorrectly signposted corridor deep in the heart of a labyrinth of one way security doors, doors that lock at certain times, lifts that only work sometimes, and all the usual things that plague buildings that were designed decades ago and then extended, altered and reallocated until they make no sense. But that’s just why the signs should be spelled correctly. Never mind. That doesn’t annoy me much. I can always go through the other (more radioactive) corridor and avoid the sign completely.
Really, it’s my ID badge that annoys me. I need that to avoid being thrown out by security (who, of course, refused to give it to me until I presented my ID card).
I don’t expect a lot from people. I’ve learned not to. You’re only disappointed. I just expect a certain level of literacy. Every year I’m forced to lower my expectations of my fellow humans and it appears that they compensate by becoming less competent. According to my ID badge, you see, I work in something called the “Medical Physic’s” department.
I’ll take my expectations of humanity down another notch, I think.

I feel your pain. All the namebadges in my old job had the incorrectly spelt “Somerfields’” on the top of it.
I’m glad I became a barman. I heard a song that it’s where everybody knows your name.
