I remember reading that, while here in the US, “champagne” refers to any sparkling white wine, France has treaties with eruopean countries prohibiting anything to be labeled “champagne” unless it comes from Champagne, France.

actually; yes, yes, they do the swiss do. Given that the actually village of champagne is over the border and populated by swiss people.
