Marines Find What?

May 11th, 2002

Once again, public transport has a place in this column, specifically, another wonderfully ambiguous headline from Metro, the free newspaper from Metro. The full headline reads “Marines find bin Laden armoury”, but when this is written in three inch letters on a newspaper which is then folded in half, the last line of the headline — the word ‘armoury’ — is lost, pending further investigation.

As a hardened cynic I was not about to believe that US marines had located Osama bin Laden, and the free newspaper on the bus had got the story to me first. Unfortunately, there was no way to discover the rest of the headline without been seen to read the thing, so I was left to speculate. “Marines find bin Laden intresting”, “Marines find bin Laden nice shirt for party”. Maybe even “Marines find bin laden with rubbish”.

Frankly I was rather disappointed with the real headline.
